Next stop: The stratosphere

At Radical, we’re embarking on a mission to revolutionize how we connect and observe our planet. Our focus is on taking aerospace technology to new heights – literally. We are building high-altitude solar-powered aircraft designed to fly continuously in the stratosphere.

To date, we have successfully validated our technology using a subscale solar aircraft, which has flown non-stop for over 24 hours. Now, we are assembling a dynamic team of engineers and builders ready to propel our technology to the next level.

If you’re passionate about advancing innovative technology and love challenging engineering projects, Radical is the startup for you. Join us and push the boundaries of what’s possible.

Core responsibilities:

As a Dynamics and Control Engineer you will play a key role in the development of Radical’s new autonomous stratospheric aircraft. You will be responsible for developing and evaluating aircraft dynamics and controllability, and conduct aircraft simulations and flight test analyses. You will be based at our Ballard office in Seattle, WA, collaborating closely with our small, agile, and interdisciplinary team. You will:

  • Conduct detailed evaluations of aircraft stability and controllability, including both open-loop and close-loop system dynamics.
  • Evaluate aeroelastic and aeroservoelastic responses for flexible aircraft configurations.

  • Tune and optimize aircraft feedback controllers against robustness and performance criteria.

  • Develop and run nonlinear aircraft simulation environments.

  • Design aircraft control allocation schemes for unconventional actuation modes.

  • Prepare technical documentation and reports and support the development of flight test plans.

Required skills:

  • MS or Ph.d specializing in Controls/Aerospace Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Practical experience developing and analyzing aircraft dynamics and control systems

  • Experience developing and operating nonlinear aircraft simulation environments

  • Expertise in flexible aircraft systems and aeroelastics

  • Experience with aircraft navigation and trajectory development

  • Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or C/C++

  • Experience with flight testing of UAS platforms

Preferred (but not required) skills:

  • Experience working with HALE UAS platforms
  • Expertise developing control allocation schemes

  • Experience using aero-structural analysis codes

  • Familiarity with aircraft model development/system identification
